Fansuri said (quoted by Al-Attas, 1970:, 319), “God created Adam in the Image of the Merciful, for the Merciful is like the Ocean and Adam a Bubble (in its waves).”
This understanding of the Concept of Man was in line with the title of zillu’llahi fil ‘alam or “the Shadow of Allah in this Universe” carried by the Malay kings. Fansuri explained this concept of the Shadow of Allah, “Although Outwardly it Exists it is Nothing but Appearance and NOT Reality; like the Image (reflected) in the Mirror, though possessing Form, does not possess Real Being.”
